Initially released on 25th May 1987, ‘Dancing On The Couch’ was Go West’s follow-up to their platinum-certified self-titled debut album. The album includes the singles ‘True Colours’, ‘I Want To Hear It From You’, ‘From Baltimore To Paris’, and ‘The King Is Dead’ which features guest vocals from Kate Bush.
The deluxe edition of ‘Dancing On The Couch’ includes the original album newly remastered by producer Gary Stevenson, a disc of B-sides, rarities, remixes and previously unreleased material and the third CD features the band live at Hammersmith Odeon recorded on ‘The Runaway Train’ tour. The DVD has the long out-of-print ‘The Runaway Train Tour’ video, also filmed at Hammersmith Odeon on July 5th 1987. Also featured are the promo videos for the singles from the album, including ‘I Want To Hear It From You’ directed by Godley & Crème, who had previously worked with the band on ‘We Close Our Eyes’ and the rarely seen alternate video of True Colours directed by Terence Donovan who also helmed the infamous ‘Addicted To Love’ video for Robert Palmer.
The three CDs & DVD are packaged in a 7” sized hardcover book with a 20-page booklet featuring photographs, lyrics, and new liner notes by the band.
‘Dancing On The Couch’ was a time of transition for Go West, as band member Richard Drummie remembers, “The way this album was conceived and achieved was very different to our first. That was written over several years. It was written in ‘episodes’. We were at home. We were in familiar surroundings. Dancing On The Couch was mostly written in a very focused environment on the Isle Of Man in a 1970’s four bedroom bungalow where we all lived for about four or five months, on and off. We then went to an almost finished studio in the middle of a field in the countryside of Denmark. I think this all had a major influence on the difference between the two LPs. On top of this, Go West had been marketed in a very poppy/visual way. It did the trick but left us feeling slightly out of water. We therefore consciously or unconsciously tried to make a more grown-up record.’
Peter Cox “Richard and I talked a lot in the early writing process for the album about finding more interesting subject matter than the archetypal love song. We had read an article about the Hollywood ‘grey listing’ of Edward G. Robinson in the 1950s, which led to Little Caesar. I am reminded – often! – that listeners don’t necessarily pay much attention to lyrics – but I’m really proud of the lyric to this song. The idea for From Baltimore To Paris came again from a newspaper article, this time about the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936. The circumstances were complicated – but in the simplest terms, giving up everything for love seemed to me deeply romantic. We recorded this at Puk Studios in Denmark – it was so quiet in the countryside there that we set up the microphone outside in a field (for technical reasons, naturally!) and I sang with my shirt off in the sunshine.”
The final single from the album The King Is Dead featured an exceptional guest in the form of Kate Bush Peter Cox “At one point Richard said that it would be great if we could get a female backing vocal on the song ‘..someone like Kate Bush’. Al (Murphy, Guitarist) had played in Kate’s band for many years and said, ‘Why not just ask Kate?’ He called her – she graciously agreed, and we sent her the multitrack tape. It was quite the moment when we heard what she had done – we hadn’t given her any notes or guidance, just let her do her fabulous thing.” Richard Drummie “This song is about meeting a hero and your established perception of them being different from the reality. That’s not their fault.. ‘no one’s to blame’.. but it immediately appeared as a poignant situation we could write about. We wrote the song really quickly. The recording is fabulous. Our illustrious producer, Gary Stevenson, is a genius. We have known him for forty odd years!”
This new release of ‘Dancing On The Couch’ also marks the first vinyl reissue of the album featuring the original record newly remastered by producer Gary Stevenson, plus a second LP of B-sides, rarities, and remixes including a previously unreleased extended mix of ‘The King Is Dead’. The LP set was cut by Barry Grint at AIR Mastering and is pressed on 180g clear vinyl, housed in a wide spine sleeve with printed inner bags.
